Summary

Join us for a vibrant and cultural celebration as we mark the end of summer with the annual New Yam Festival, also known as Iri Ji/Iwa Ji at McCarren Park in Brooklyn, NY! This deeply rooted tradition is a significant event in the Igbo culture, symbolizing gratitude to the earth and the deities for a bountiful harvest. It is a time of thanksgiving, unity, and renewal, bringing together the community to honor our ancestors, celebrate our heritage, and enjoy the fruits of our labor!

What to Expect:

Igbo Cuisine and Yam Delicacies
Indulge in a feast of traditional Igbo cuisine, with a special focus on yam-based dishes that showcase the versatility and significance of this staple crop. From yam porridge (Ji Agwogwo) to yam & oil (Ji Mmanu) served with rich cuisine like jollof rice, our food stalls and vendors will offer a wide array of delicious options to satisfy your taste buds. Whether you're a foodie or simply curious about Nigerian cuisine, this is a culinary experience you don't want to miss.

Live Music and Dance
As the sun sets, the festival grounds will come alive with live music and dance performances that blend traditional and contemporary Afrobeat sounds. Dance to the rhythm of the drums, enjoy the energetic performances of local artists, and feel the spirit of the Igbo culture as we close the festival with a lively and joyous celebration. The evening will culminate in a grand finale performance that promises to leave you with unforgettable memories.

Family-Friendly Activities
This festival is designed for the whole family to enjoy! There will be plenty of activities for children, including face painting, traditional games, and a kids' corner where they can learn about Igbo customs and participate in fun cultural activities. It’s a perfect opportunity for families to bond, explore, and celebrate together.

Sponsorship and Vendor Opportunities: Are you interested in showcasing your business or supporting this cultural event? We have a range of sponsorship and vendor opportunities available. Please contact us at tristate@umuigbounite.com for more information on how you can get involved!

COVID-19 Safety Measures: Your health and safety are our top priority. We will be following all local guidelines and health protocols to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout the venue, and we encourage the use of masks and social distancing where necessary.

Come and be a part of this rich cultural tradition! The End of Summer New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) is not just an event; it’s a celebration of life, heritage, and community. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to this memorable occasion.

Let's celebrate the harvest, the culture, and the community—Igbo style!
